§ Mr. SNOWDENasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether the practice of placing a number of unattached surveyors of Customs and Excise, of Customs origin and having no experience of Excise Duties, in temporary charge of former Excise districts, seriously interferes with the prospects of promotion of officers trained in 470W the Excise branch; and whether, in view of the promise made on behalf of the Government that as a result of the amalgamation of the Customs and Excise departments the prospects of no class and, as far as possible, of no official should suffer thereby, he will say what steps it is proposed to take to fulfil this promise?
§ Mr. LLOYD GEORGEThe arrangements in question follow on the recommendations of the Amalgamation Committee, who made other recommendations to meet any hardship caused to the officers of either of the old services by the unavoidable suspension of promotions.
