§ Mr. O'GRADYasked the Secretary to the Treasury whether he could say how many boy clerks or boy copyists were registered for employment in the Civil Service between the 1st January, 1901, and 1st January, 1911; how many of these passed the examination for either the second division, Excise, or Customs during this period; and how many were discharged from the service on reaching the age laid down as the limit of their service as boy clerks?

Second Division, November, 1902, to September, 1910 881 Assistants of Excise, June, 1906, to May, 1908 97 Assistants of Customs, February, 1907, to August, 1908 55 Assistants of Customs and Excise, April, 1910, to November, 1910 177 Customs Port Clerkships, May, 1908 3 In addition, many boy clerks passed the examination for assistant clerks (new class) for which only boy clerks are eligible.
