HC Deb 21 November 1911 vol 31 cc1168-70W
Mr. C. BATHURST

asked the President of the Board of Agriculture if he will say what proportion of the total income of the Board available for agricultural purposes is expended annually upon administration expenses and the salaries of officials and inspectors.

Mr. HERBERT LEWIS

supplied the following particulars:—

Mr. C. BATHURST

asked the President of the Board of Agriculture if he will state what is the present total income of the Board available for all the purposes of the Board other than fisheries and the maintenance of Kew Gardens; and how such income compares with the income available for the like purposes in 1900 and 1905?

Mr. HERBERT LEWIS

It is not possible to make a very precise estimate of

1911–12. £ £ £
Gross total of the Vote for the Department 274,464
Deduct—Kew Gardens 23,013
Fisheries—
Salaries and Wages, and Travelling and Miscellaneous Expenses, say 5,500
North Sea Fisheries International Investigation (England) 7,530
Collection of Statistics 3,200
16,230
39,243
Total £235,221
1905–6. £ £ £
Gross total expenditure of the Department 151,836
Deduct—Kew Gardens 19,942
Fisheries—
Salaries, etc., as above 4,000
Collection of Statistics 1,600
5,600
25,542
Total £126,294
1900–1. £
Gross total expenditure of the Department 90,982
(NOTE.—Kew Gardens and Fishery business were transferred to the Board in 1903.)

In addition to Votes of Parliament the following sums were drawn from the Local Taxation Accounts under the provisions of the Diseases of Animals Act, 1894 [Section 18 (2)], to meet expenditure out

the income of the Department for purposes other than fisheries and the maintenance of Kew, owing to the fact that certain branches of work are done in common and not separately, e.g., the preparation of statistics and establishment business. The following statement will, however, I think, sufficiently serve the purpose which the hon. Member has in view:—

of the Cattle Pleuro-Pneumonia Account for Great Britain:—

£
1911–12 (estimated) 91,000
1905–6 7,000
1900–1 25,000
