HC Deb 04 May 1911 vol 25 cc724-5W
Mr. GINNELL

asked the Chief Secretary whether he is aware of the complaints prevalent in county Roscommon against the practice of the Congested Districts Board in keeping in grass and undistributed untenanted land acquired by them for distribution while many of those who should get portions of it are forced to emigrate; whether he is aware that the Board have let to graziers this year, on the eleven months' system, lands held by them in this condition during the last six years; and whether he will find an immediate remedy, or leave the people to find one, for this particular method of defeating the intentions of Parliament?

Mr. BIRRELL

I have dealt fully with the practice of the Congested Districts Board with regard to the rearrangement of lands in my reply to the question asked by the hon. Member on 27th March. The process is necessarily a slow one, and occasionally gives rise to some natural impatience on the part of the persons who expect to benefit by the distribution of the lands, but the Board are not aware that any such persons have emigrated. The Board are carrying out the intentions of Parliament as quickly as they can.
