§ Mr. FELLasked the Home Secretary if any of the inspectors of mines in Lanarkshire are able to speak Russian or Polish, or any language spoken by the foreign miners employed in the collieries there; and if any of the foremen in the collieries are also able to communicate in their own language with these miners?
§ Mr. CHURCHILLThe answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. As regards the second part, I am informed that at some collieries, though not at the majority, there are officials who are able to communicate with the foreign miners in their own tongue; but, as I intimated in reply to a previous question of the hon. Member, in every place where these miners work there is always one of them who is able to speak sufficient English to understand the instructions given to him by the officials, and he interprets them to his fellows.
