The printing was ordered under a running contract entered into by the Controller, His Majesty's Stationery Office, after competition. These three publications, therefore, were not put up to special tender. The Field Service Pocket Book is largely composed of extracts from drill-books, all of which are under revision, and the delay in reprinting has been caused by the desire to bring out an edition which will embody all the changes in contemplation in other books. It was originally intended to reprint the "Manual of Signal-ling" as it stands, but the opportunity offered to bring the naval and military systems into accord at those points where they meet and the necessary trials have delayed the issue of the new book, which, however, is now in final proof, and will go to press in the course of the next month.

Mr. HALDANE

The figures mentioned do not include provision for the horse. The average cost of the troop horse, including replacement, forage, saddlery, stabling, etc., is about £31 15s. a year.
