HC Deb 21 March 1911 vol 23 cc364-5W
Mr. GUINEY

asked the Chief Secretary whether he is aware that the Charleville Rural Council at their last meeting appointed a man named Maurice Hassett as tenant to a labourer's cottage in the Ballyhea district, and that Hassett is a clerk in the Ballyhea creamery and in receipt of more than 17s. 6d. weekly wages; and whether he will instruct the Local Government Board for Ireland that such letting is illegal, and direct them to issue an order to the Charleville Council to that effect?

Mr. BIRRELL

On the 8th instant the Charleville Rural District Council appointed Maurice Hassett as tenant of a cottage erected under the Labourers Acts, and the Local Government Board have since received two complaints to the effect mentioned in the question. The Board have forwarded these two communications to the council, and have informed them that, if the facts be as alleged, Hassett would appear not to be an agricultural labourer, and that it is the council's duty in such circumstances to determine the tenancy forthwith, under Section 13 of the Labourers' Act of 1883.
