HC Deb 17 March 1911 vol 22 cc2679-80W
Mr. LANSBURY

asked the President of the Local Government Board, if he is aware that the London education authority propose to close the day schools for a week during the Coronation festivities and that during this week no meals will be supplied to necessitous school children; and whether, under these circumstances and in order to prevent suffering, he will inform the education authority that, in the event of their arranging to feed these children during the Coronation week, he will, if the payment for such meals out of the rates is surcharged by the district auditor, remit such surcharge by the exercise of the powers vested in him?

Mr. BURNS

I understand that the London education authority propose to close the public elementary schools for some days during the Coronation festivities. As I have previously informed the hon. Member, the question of extending the scope of the Education (Provision of Meals) Act, 1906, is one for the decision of Parliament, and I cannot take the action suggested in his question.
