HC Deb 07 March 1911 vol 22 cc1171-2W
Mr. WILLIAM REDMOND

asked the Secretary to the Treasury if he will state the amount collected in duty on Irish-grown tobacco in each of the last six years?

Mr. HOBHOUSE

The net receipt of duty on Irish home-grown tobacco in the last six years was:—

Year. £
1905 736
1906 2,155
1907 5,920
1908 5,168
1909 6,232
1910 11,785

In comparing these figures it should be borne in mind that on all tobacco grown in Ireland up to the end of 1909 a rebate of one-third the duty was allowed, while since that date a fixed grant of £5,000 a year has been allowed for the encouragement of the industry; also that on 30th April, 1909, the duties on Irish and other home-grown tobacco were increased.
