HC Deb 21 February 1911 vol 21 c1869W
Mr. GILHOOLY

asked the Chief Secretary whether he can state the number of bays in Ireland in which steam trawling is by law permitted, and the minimum tonnage of the vessels engaged therein?

Mr. BIRRELL

The number of places in which steam trawling is prohibited is so great and the restrictions so varied that it would be inconvenient to detail them in the form of a reply to a question. I will send a list of them to the hon. Member. The by-laws prohibiting or restricting trawling do not provide exemptions in regard to vessels under a certain tonnage save in the case of Bantry Bay, where steam trawling is prohibited by vessels of more than twenty tons net register, and Waterford Harbour where, within certain points, all kinds of trawling is prohibited by boats exceeding ten tons measurement.
