HC Deb 16 February 1911 vol 21 cc1408-9W
Lord CHARLES BERESFORD

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether he is aware that men belonging to the Royal Fleet Reserve who joined the Canadian Navy lost 6d. a day retainer; and whether they were informed before volunteering that they could not draw their retainer whilst serving in the Canadian Navy?

Mr. McKENNA

All Royal Fleet Reserve men who were accepted for service under the Canadian Government had to be reentered in the Royal Navy for that purpose, and consequently had to be discharged from the Royal Fleet Reserve thus forfeiting their right to draw Royal Fleet Reserve retainers. Steps were taken to inform the men concerned. All such men, however, on their return to England will be re-enrolled in the Reserve and will count their service under the Canadian Government, if satisfactory, as time qualifying for Royal Fleet Reserve pension or gratuity.
