HC Deb 16 February 1911 vol 21 cc1403-4W
Mr. REMNANT

asked when Estate Duty is tendered on the amount as the value of the property why is it not accepted; and when the Estate Duty is refused is interest charged on the amount of such duty when ascertained?

Mr. HOBHOUSE

In practice, Estate Duty, when tendered, is accepted as a provisional payment, until the value of the property is settled. The second part of the question does not therefore arise.

Mr. REMNANT

asked the Chancellor if he is aware of the delay that takes place in passing estate duty accounts, and the difficulties in which owners of property are placed by such delay; and what steps he proposes to take to remedy this state of things?

Mr. HOBHOUSE

Yes, Sir, I am aware that there has necessarily been some delay in the past in making the valuations of property for the purposes of Death Duties; but it is hoped that such delay will in the future be reduced to a minimum.
