HC Deb 15 December 1911 vol 32 cc2818-9W
Lord CHARLES BERESFORD

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether he is aware that, during the time Mr. Alfred Edward Griffiths was deputy- superintendent of telegraphs in India and whilst he was on duty at Jubbulpore, away from his own station, a Government cash chest, of which at the time he was practically not in charge, was robbed of 641 rupees; whether he is aware that, although he was proved blameless in the matter and innocent of complicity in the robbery, and although the money was made good so that the Government sustained no loss, Mr. Griffiths was summarily dismissed; whether he is aware that Mr. Griffiths was ruined after serving the State for twenty-nine years and his prospective pension lost for a crime of which he had been proved absolutely guiltless; and whether he can see his way to reinstate Mr. Griffiths in his former position?

Mr. MONTAGU

The Secretary of State has received no information on this case. If, as alleged, Mr. Griffiths has been dismissed by the Government of India, it will be open to him to appeal to the Secretary of State against the orders of that Government, provided that his memorial is submitted in accordance with the memorial rules.
