HC Deb 15 December 1911 vol 32 cc2825-6W
Mr. LANSBURY

asked the Postmaster-General whether, having regard to the amount of telegraphic newswork dealt with at or about midnight in the Central Telegraph Office, and in view of the discomfort and inconvenience entailed upon the staff through detention on overtime after midnight, he will make inquiries with a view to increasing the present volunteer staff to the strength necessary to enable them to deal adequately with all late newswork?

Mr. HERBERT SAMUEL

As I informed the hon. Member on the 24th ultimo, suitable arrangements are made at the Central Telegraph Office to deal with the varying volume of telegraphic news-work expected from day to day; but I cannot keep excess staff on duty every day after midnight when work may be expected for them only occasionally.
