HC Deb 21 May 1910 vol 116 c404W
Sir F. YOUNG

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that increased prices for beer have been charged by brewers on de liveries made to working men's clubs since the announcement of the Budget proposals; whether it was intended that the additional taxes should entirely fall upon the brewers; and, if so, what steps do the Government propose to take in the matter?

Mr. McCURDY

I have been asked to reply. It was intended that the additional duty to which the hon. Member refers should be borne jointly by the brewer and retailer and not by the consumer. The Food Controller has no in formation to the effect stated in the first part of the question; but he is confident that any case of grievance or dispute can be remedied by reference to the local committees recently set up, as stated in my reply to the hon. Member for Macclesfield on 19th May.
