§ Mr. KERR-SMILEYasked how many Irish national teachers' residences have been built by loans from the Board of Works; how many of these loans are being repaid by the Commissioners of National Education and the teachers of the schools to which the residences are attached; in how many instances is the local moiety paid by persons other than teachers; and, when the last moieties are paid by the Commissioners and the teachers, to whom does the property thus paid for belong?
§ Mr. REDMOND BARRYOne thousand one hundred and sixty-eight teachers' residences have been provided by means of loans from the Board of Works. In twenty-seven cases the loan has been redeemed, and in twenty-two the Commissioners of National Education are unable to make any contribution owing to non-fulfilment of the necessary conditions. In the remainig 1,119 cases the loans are being repaid conjointly by the Commissioners and the local parties interested. It would not be possible without an exhaustive examination of the school returns to say in how many cases the local moieties of their redemption money are paid by the teachers and in how many cases they are being paid by others. The ownership of the premises would not appear to be affected by the repayment of the loan.
