HC Deb 05 April 1910 vol 16 cc390-1W
Mr. FETHERSTONHAUGH

asked the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether is aware that the Commissioners of Intermediate Education have so arranged the dates for the examinations this year that obligatory subjects will be taken on two days which are during the Jewish Pentecost, and that no Jewish candidates will be able to compete; and will he suggest to the Commissioners a change of date, or special arrangements for Jewish candidates, and advise the Commissioners to avoid such an error in future?

Mr. REDMOND BARRY

It is, I understand, the fact that the examination in one obligatory subject is fixed for a day which is a Jewish holiday. I am informed that the arrangement was made without knowledge of the fact, the Commissioners not having received any notification on the part of the Jewish body, such as I understand is usual in dealing with other educational authorities, of the dates of the Jewish holidays. The Commissioners fear that it would not be possible at this stage to make any alteration in the time-table.
