HL Deb 20 January 2005 vol 668 c122WA
Lord Lester of Heme Hill

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will ensure that the proposed legislation to extend the law against religious discrimination will give similar protection against discrimination to that contained in the Race Relations Act 1976, as amended, including provision for the definition of discrimination and the circumstances in which it will be unlawful to discriminate. [HL500]

Baroness Scotland of Asthai

In the Queen's Speech on 23 November, the Government announced their plans to introduce legislation to protect people from religious discrimination in the provision of goods, facilities, services, and premises. The legislation will be introduced at the earliest opportunity.

It is intended that the proposed legislation will give protection from both direct and indirect religious discrimination in a similar manner to that from racial discrimination provided by the Race Relations Act 1976, as amended.
