To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will make a statement on the regulation of body piercing and tattooing establishments. [172030]

Local authorities have powers to regulate body piercing and tattooing businesses by requiring registration and observance of bylaws relating to the hygiene and cleanliness of premises, practitioners and equipment. In London, local authorities have powers under private legislation to require such businesses to be licensed and observe licensing conditions relating to a range of matters including the hygiene and cleanliness of the premises and equipment.

It is an offence for a body piercing or tattooing business to operate without being registered or licensed or to breach bylaws or licensing conditions.
