To ask the Deputy Prime Minister what action his Department is taking to increase participation and engagement in local democratic structures. [159911]

Mr. Raynsford

The Government are keen to encourage participation and engagement in local democracy and continues to pursue a range of initiatives aimed at achieving this.

These include local government reform, new community-based initiatives, electoral pilots, the extension of e-government, and the opportunity for people to vote on regional devolution in the northern regions.
