To ask the Prime Minister (1) how many staff are employed in his Office to work in the communications field, broken down by(a) Government Information and Communication Service staff and (b) other staff, broken down by (i) press officers, (ii) special advisers and (iii) others; [158155]

(2) what the total expenditure on communications for the Office has been in 2003–04, broken down by expenditure on (a) Government Information and Communication Service staff and (b) other staff, broken down by (i) press officers, (ii) special advisers and (iii) others. [158190]

The Prime Minister

At 1 March, there were 11 staff working as Press Officers of which 10 are members of the Government Information and Communication Service. There are two special advisers who are Press Officers, one special adviser who works in the Strategic Communications Unit and nine civil servants who either work in the Strategic Communications Unit or provide administrative support.

Final cost figures for 2003–04 are not yet available.
