asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many appeals were made to the Civil Service Appeal Body by staff (including industrial staff) of the Ministry of Defence in each of the years 1994–2002 and in the year 2003 to date; and over the same periods:

  1. (a)what was the total of such appeals for the whole Civil Service; and
  2. (b)what percentage of the whole Civil Service (including industrial staff) was represented by staff of the Ministry of Defence. [HL441]

Information on the number of appeals received from the Ministry of Defence by the Civil Service Appeal Board for the years 1994–95 to 1997–98 could only be obtained at disproportionate cost. This is because a central record is no longer held. For later years, the number of appeals received from the Ministry of Defence was as follows:
