HC Deb 28 April 2004 vol 420 c1003W
Rob Marris

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs how many businesses in the UK recycle small, domestic-type batteries. [164531]

Mr. Morley

[holding answer 26 April 2004]: At present, such recycling capacity is extremely limited in the UK. There is a plant in the Midlands that recycles silver oxide batteries commonly used in watches and there are plans for a recycling plant in Scotland which would recycle Lithium-ion batteries, including the portable type. Currently, the Government are in discussions with stakeholders examining the possibility of setting up UK recycling capacity for zinc carbon and alkali manganese batteries, commonly found in portable radios and children's toys.
