HC Deb 09 September 2003 vol 410 cc357-9W
Mr. Dobson

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what the maximum electricity demand was in each year since 1983; and what the percentage change in maximum demand was in each year. [128303]

Mr. Timms

Available data are shown in the following table. From 1987 onwards data are for the United Kingdom. Before 1987 data are for Great Britain only. 1987 is given for both geographical bases.

Mr. Dobson

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what powers she has to require the owners of out of commission generating capacity to bring it back into operation. [128300]

Mr. Timms

As stated in the Energy White Paper, we will not intervene in the market except in extreme circumstances, such as to avert, as a last resort, a potentially serious risk to safety. However, under section 34 of the 1989 Electricity Act my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry does have the power to order generators to run power plant.

Mr. Dobson

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what the total generating capacity available from(a) coal-fired, (b) oil-fired, (c) gas-fired, (d) nuclear and (e) renewable sources was in each year since 1983. [128298]

Mr. Timms

Available data are shown in the following tables. From 1986–87 onwards data are for the United Kingdom. Before 1986–87 data are for Great Britain only and fewer types of station are identified. 1986–87 is given for both geographical bases.
