To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many children in Brinsford Young Offenders Institution have been placed in the segregation unit since January; and for how long. [130239]

Provisional data on the number of children held in segregation at Brinsford young offender institution from January to August 2003 is shown in the following table. This has been split to show the number of times the segregation unit was used for(a) less than seven days, (b) for longer than seven days and (c) for longer than 28 days during this period. The length of stay is dependent on the reason and will vary from no more than a few hours to a carefully prescribed number of days.
