§ Mr. JamiesonThe police have the prime statutory authority for directing traffic on public highways. Traffic wardens, as part of the Police Service, are empowered to direct traffic in certain circumstances. A limited number of authorised persons, including school crossing patrols, have power to stop vehicles for particular purposes. Vehicle and Operator Services Agency examiners, accredited under the Police Reform Act 2002, have powers to stop vehicles for the purpose of inspecting their roadworthiness.
