To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, pursuant to his statement of 9 June 2003,Official Report, column 420, what evidential basis he used to support his statement that 3 million jobs in the UK were dependent on the European Union. [129218]

The Treasury estimates that 3 million jobs in the UK are linked, directly and indirectly, to the export of goods and services to the European Union. This figure is based on the assumption that the share of total UK employment associated with UK exports to the EU is equal to the share of total UK value added (GVA) generated by UK exports to the EU.
