To ask the Secretary of State for Transport when he expects trains from Liverpool to London to travel at speeds of 125 mph. [136453]

[holding answer 4 November 2003]: It is expected that the modernisation of the West Coast Main Line will enable train services, including those from London to Liverpool, to travel at speeds of up to 125 mph from the autumn of 2004.
