HC Deb 04 March 2003 vol 400 c916W
Annette Brooke

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what plans her Department has to enforce the(a) accurate and (b) specific labelling of fur used in consumer goods; and if she will make a statement. [98876]

Miss Melanie Johnson

The Trade Descriptions Act 1968 makes it a criminal offence, if a trader applies a false trade description to any goods or, supplies or offers to supply any goods to which a false description is applied. This legislation is enforced by local authority trading standards departments.

I also refer the answer given to the hon. Member on 25 February 2003, Official Report, column 421W, about the difficulties of identifying certain fur types and the steps that this Department is taking to address this matter.
