§ Mrs. BrookeTo ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills what action he has taken to support the provision of university courses for disabled students. [117380]
§ Alan JohnsonThe Government are committed to the principle that all those who can benefit from higher education should have the opportunity to do so. We amended the Disability Discrimination Act in 2001 to make it unlawful for higher education institutions to treat disabled applicants less favourably than others and to require them to make reasonable adjustments so that disabled students are not placed at a substantial disadvantage. It is, however, for the institutions themselves to determine which courses they will provide. Through the Higher Education Funding Council for England, we have funded the National Disability Team to promote good practice in learning and teaching across the sector.
