To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs how many licences have been issued in respect of controlling Canada geese in each of the last five years. [126016]

The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 protects all wild birds and implements the EC Birds Directive in Great Britain Under article 9(3) of the directive we are required to send a report to the Commission on the implementation of Article 9, undertaken through section 16 of the 1981 Act.

The figures for the last five years are as follows:

Mr. Bradshaw

In the last five years the Department has issued a total of 58 licences specifically for air safety. This represents the total number of licences issued rather than those specifically issued to the British Airport Authority.
