To ask the Secretary of State for Health what progress has been made towards the targets of(a) 7,500 consultants and 2,000 general practitioners by 2004 and (b) 15,000 consultants and general practitioners by 2008. [120441]

Between September 1999 and September 2002, the number of consultants working in the National Health Service increased by 3,749 from 23,321 to 27,070.

Between September 1999 and September 2002, the number of general practitioners working in the NHS increased by 735 from 28,467 to 29,202.
