To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many prescriptions for antidepressant medicines were written in the NHS in England in 2002; and what the total cost of antidepressant medicines was to the NHS in that year. [123432]

In 2002, 26.3 million prescription items of anti-depressant drugs were dispensed in the community in England, with a net ingredient cost of £380.9 million.
