To ask the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions what percentage of the gas network has metal mains pipes. [87482]

I am informed by the Health and Safety Executive that there are approximately 275,000 km of gas main in Transco's network of which approximately 55 per cent. of the total length are metal i.e. 151,000 km.
