What figure is used to calculate the cost of the provision of public facilities for the movement of freight by road; and when this figure was last updated. [HL4294]

Figures are not kept in the form requested. However, projected spending on construction and maintenance of the trunk road network in England for 2002–03 amounts to £1.68 billion. Across trunk roads in Great Britain, movements of goods vehicles and light vans accounted in 2000 for some 22 per cent of total vehicle mileage.
