To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many Gurkhas were recruited to serve in the British Army in each of the last 10 years; and how many are serving. [55461]

As at 1 April 2002, there are 3,449 trained Gurkhas serving in the British Army. Details of the number recruited in each of the last 10 years are shown in the following table:
