To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many staff were employed by the NHS in(a) Gloucestershire and (b) England in each of the last five years for which figures are available. [54665]

[holding answer 8 May 2002]: The number of staff working for the national health service in England and Gloucestershire for the last five years is as follows.

An increase of 8.2 per cent. in Gloucestershire compared with an increase of 10 per cent. in England.
