To ask the Deputy Prime Minister what his policy is on the provision of schemes for guaranteeing(a) deposits and (b) rent for tenants in private rented accommodation. [63912]

Rent Deposit Guarantee Schemes, which combine Deposit schemes and Rent in Advance/ Guarantee Schemes, can be effective in helping homeless households access the private rented sector. The Government fully recognise the valuable and vital service which Rent Deposit Guarantee Schemes can play in tackling homelessness. This is recognised in our recent report, "More than a roof'. It is for this reason that we currently fund a number of rent deposit schemes aroundthe country, and we would expect local authorities
