To ask the Minister for the Cabinet Office what the expenditure of the Government's Information and Communication Service's operations within the Cabinet Office was(a) in the latest available year and (b) in 1996–97; and if he will make a statement. [63582]

In 2001–02, the Government Information and Communication Service's centre in the Cabinet Office spent £750,000 on its operations to support recruitment, promotion and career development, and the provision of advice on propriety and professional matters. The equivalent for its predecessor, the Information Officer Management Unit, in 1996–97 was £607,000.
