To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many staff were employed by his Department on(a) 2 May 1997 and (b) 31 May 2002. [60928]

Data on staffing levels are not available for the dates requested as they are collected twice a year only, as at 1 April and 1 October. We are currently in the process of collecting the data for 1 April 2002.

I refer the hon. Gentleman to the answer given by the Minister of State, Cabinet Office on 13 June.
