HC Deb 17 June 2002 vol 387 c44W
Mr. Davidson

To ask the Prime Minister what his policy is on the call by the President of the European Commission that Britain should give up its place on the IMF and G7 to a representative of the Commission; and if he will make a statement. [60585]

The Prime Minister

The Articles of Agreement of the International Monetary Fund are based on the principle of membership by and representation of national Governments. Membership of the G78 is also based on this principle. The European Commission is not represented at the Board of Governors of the IMF, although does participate in G78 meetings on some issues. While the Government will continue to cooperate with European Union partners, and others, to promote growth, stability and poverty reduction world wide, the UK does not support a role for the Commission as the sole representative of the European Union in the IMF and G7.
