To ask the Secretary of State for Health what the average waiting time was in(a) 1997 and (b) 2001 to be seen by a doctor for treatment in casualty. [57526]

[holding answer 22 May 2002]: Information regarding average waiting times to see a doctor for treatment in accident and emergency (A&E) is not collected centrally.

From August 2001, data on total time in A&E from arrival to admission, transfer or discharge has been collected.

[holding answer 22 May 2002]: The accident and emergency (A&E) modernisation programme was launched in 1998. A total of £150 million has been invested enabling 180 A&E departments to be modernised.
