To ask the Secretary of State for Health how much money has been invested in health action zones by the NHS in each year since 1997. [27354]

There are 26 Health Action Zones (HAZs) based in the most deprived areas of the country. Since their inception in 1998 up to the end of the 2001–02 financial year HAZs have received total direct funding of £274.2 million to tackle issues including smoking cessation and drug misuse. Health authorities in HAZ areas have also received £101.8 million Health Inequalities Adjustment funding (HIA).

The table shows the HAZ and HIA funding for 1998 to 2001.
