HC Deb 28 January 2002 vol 379 cc5-6W
Mr. Bercow

To ask the Secretary of State for International Development what her estimate is of the expenditure of her Department on newspapers, magazines and periodicals in each of the last four years. [30095]

Clare Short

The Department's core, central expenditure on newspaper and periodicals (journals and magazines) is as follows.

£
Newspapers Periodicals
1997–98 4,786 57,639
1998–99 4,736 61,901
1999–2000 5,748 65,660
2000–01 2,540 97,824

The decline in expenditure on newspapers in 2000–01 reflects the decentralisation of non-core provision to Departments and country offices. The rise in expenditure on periodicals in the same year reflects the electronic provision of certain periodicals, which are now more easily available to a larger proportion of DFID's UK-based and overseas staff.
