HL Deb 14 January 2002 vol 630 cc134-5WA
Lord Astor of Hever

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is their estimate of the economic impact on the South Midlands of the British Grand Prix. [HL2146]

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Trade and Industry (Lord Sainsbury of Turville)

The Government recognise the importance of retaining the British Grand Prix. While we have made no official estimate of the scale of the economic benefits it provides, a study by the FIA (motorsport's world governing body) estimated that the 1996 Grand Prix contributed about £28 million to the South Midlands economy.
