HC Deb 11 February 2002 vol 380 c38W
Mr. Fabian Hamilton

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on(a) the peace process in Burundi and (b) the potential role of the UN in Burundi. [33929]

Mr. MacShane

We are encouraged by the steps that the transitional Government in Burundi has taken to secure peace and stability since the start of its term in November last year. The deployment of South African troops to protect returning political leaders has played a key role in this process. The security situation, however, remains unstable. Without an agreed ceasefire, the United Nations will continue to focus on the delivery of humanitarian assistance.
