To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Skills what estimate she has made of the number of teachers in maintained schools who left their employment at a school during the course of each of the last four academic years. [7262]

Leavers in the year prior to:

Retired 16,800 16,600 8,000 8,800

Left service for reasons other than retirement 18,900 22,600 23,700 26,200

Total leavers 35,700 39,200 31,700 35,000

Some teachers who left service will return after a career break.
