HC Deb 18 July 2001 vol 372 c224W
Mr. Gareth R. Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what action his Department is taking to ensure food supplements used by sports people do not contain banned substances. [3730]

Yvette Cooper

All food supplements, including those for sports people, must comply with food law, which is enforced by local authorities via their trading standards or environmental health departments.

Supplements which fit the legal definition of a medicine are controlled by the Medicines Control Agency (MCA). The MCA is responsible for enforcing medicines legislation, and is currently reviewing the status of a number of sports supplements.
