HC Deb 27 February 2001 vol 363 c585W
18. Mr. Allan

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what recent discussions he has had regarding the political situation in Ecuador. [149720]

Mr. Battle

I spoke to the Ecuadorean Ambassador about the political situation in his country when he called on me on 1 February.

The Permanent Under-Secretary at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Sir John Kerr, also held wide-ranging discussions with Ministers and senior officials when he visited Ecuador on 14–15 January.

We have been following recent events closely and are pleased to note that the recent disputes between the Government and protesters over the economic reform measures have been settled.
