To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment if he will set out with statistical information relating as directly as possible to the Tooting, Wandsworth parliamentary constituency, the effect of his Department's policies and actions since 1 May 1997 on this constituency. [149865]

Outlined are details of the effect on the Tooting constituency and Wandsworth LEA of a range of the Department's policies.

Sure Start Wandsworth is one of the second wave Sure Start programmes. The programme is based in Battersea and covers Latchmere, St. Johns and St. Mary's Park wards. Sure Start Battersea was approved on 6 October 2000 and will receive revenue funding of £1,829,000 and capital funding of £705,000, until March 2003.

Infant class size The LEA has made good progress towards reducing infant class sizes to 30.

  • In the Tooting constituency there are two specialist schools:
  • Chestnut Grove School (Arts), designated in September 1997; and
  • Ernest Bevin School (Sports), designated in September 2000.

Education Action Zone (EAZ) There is one Small EAZ in Wandsworth LEA called "Achieving Excellence in Battersea EAZ". The zone started in April 2000 and is made up of eight schools, comprising one secondary, six primary and one special school. The schools are:

Excellence in Cities (EiC) Wandsworth is included in Phase 1 of the Excellence in Cities programme, which started in September 1999. All of Wandsworth's nine secondary schools are involved in the EiC programme, as well as 26 of its 57 primary schools.

Learning Mentor strand in Wandsworth 19 learning mentors have been appointed at secondary level, and half of the planned amount of 29 full time equivalent primary learning mentors have been appointed.

Learning Support Units (LSU)

Gifted and Talented in Wandsworth Gifted and Talented strand coordinators are in place. All nine secondary schools are involved in the Gifted and Talented strand, along with eight primary schools.

Secondary Gifted and Talented In the last academic year the EiC in Wandsworth brought about 148 early entries for GCSE. 725 were involved in out of school activities. Last summer 93 attended HE summer school.

City Learning Centre (CLC) There is one CLC in operation, which was opened last November by Estelle Morris, and currently there are no more planned.

Modern Apprenticeships Information about the number of Modern Apprenticeships in South West London is unreliable because of the inaccuracy of some postcodes on the Department's database. The inaccuracies are being corrected and information on Modern Apprenticeship starts for all parliamentary constituencies in England will be made available in the Library of the House in March.

Labour market statistics The working age employment rate in Wandsworth UA in autumn 2000 was 79.9 per cent., above the UK rate of 74.7 per cent. The rate in autumn 1997 was 72.3 per cent. The claimant unemployment rate has fallen from 11.0 per cent. in December 1997 to 6.8 per cent. in December 2000 in the Tooting constituency

New Deal statistics In the Tooting constituency to the end of November 2000, 1,029 young people have joined the New Deal, with 413 finding employment. Of these, 317 have entered sustained employment.
